I’ve never been afraid of weights & I’ve always loved to challenge myself physically. In high school, long before I ever really knew what I was doing in the gym, I would jump at any opportunity to show off my skills as a tough girl & use the dumbbells-LOL... besides, that’s where all the hot guys would hang out! ;)
Depending on how much cardio I’m doing & how distracted I get, my workout sessions in total will last approximately 1-1.5 hours. But in an ideal world I like to get in, get it done, & get out- efficiency is more important than longevity.
I’m most proud of my tenacity & discipline which I'm able to apply to everything I do. Over the last 3 years I’ve watched & experienced a complete transformation within myself, which had a positive impact on all areas of my life. I’m so proud of the changes I made because now I can be the positive & influential leader I always wanted to be. My life is balanced & structured because of the discipline I’ve achieved & my tenacity won’t allow anything to get in the way!
Since I started competing in 2009 I never really took a break from training or eating because for me it’s just a way of life. Now this doesn’t mean I diet 24/7 or train the same all year round. During my off season (usually 3-6 months between competitions) I try to stay really consistent with weight training because that’s the time that really counts when you’re working on changing your physique. Earlier this year I traveled to Europe & was gone for almost a month which was my break away from the gym & it definitely did my body, mind, & soul good!
Before I was ever an IFBB Pro, before my Team Sass competition coaching, training, & nutrition company became successful, & before I knew what it really meant to make sacrifices, I lived a VERY different life. One of the major obstacles for me that I often talk about is the partying lifestyle I used to live. At the time I felt like I was totally in control & the ruler of my own destiny but that wasn’t the case. In reality I was unhappy that I wasn’t being taken seriously by anyone including my boyfriend at the time, I was stuck in a 9 to 5 job not doing what I really wanted to do, & I was using my partying, clubbing, & drinking as an escape from what was really going on. I knew I was worth so much more than the life I was living & I had so much more to give but how could anyone see that potential in me when I was so out of control. So I stopped- cold turkey! That’s me...all or nothing, black & white, straight to the point. Once I made my decision to change both mentally & physically there was no stopping me. I turned IFBB Pro less than 8 months after that, built my business from scratch, & because of my story & experience I was able to reach out to others & give them the necessary support to make changes in their lives!
Everyday, no matter how many times I see it happen, my clients discipline, progress, & determination to succeed & be the best they can be never ceases to amaze me! THAT is MY motivation to work harder, live life happier, & be a better me! It should be everyones job to uplift & empower each other to live up to our full potential & sometimes just sharing your personal experiences & life stories can be powerful enough to change someones life forever.
I NEVER get cravings! Haha...Yeah right! I’m totally kidding...I like yummy food & tasty treats just like everyone else. I take classic dishes & turn them into my own special version of diet-safe recipes that are not only good for you but are even more flavorful than the original! I think that life shouldn’t be about dieting in the traditional way but rather developing a new way of looking at food, cooking healthier, & eating with a meaning! There is no reason to deprive yourself of treats & sweets but moderation is key! When I’m dieting for a competition it’s a bit more complicated because you can’t just bake up a treat (even if it’s diet safe) & munch all day. Food is much more strict & restricted during competition prep so I have alternative solutions: drink tons of water, chew sugar-free gum, drink, coffee & tea sweetened with Stevia, & I eat my whey like pudding only adding a teaspoon or two of water to keep it thick like dessert! LOL!
I feel that cardio is a very personal thing- I say, make what you enjoy doing, your cardio! I love being outdoors, hiking, swimming, surfing, etc. so these are the things I can stick to doing because I love & enjoy them & I can implement within my daily cardio routine!
When I’m in the gym I like to mix it up. My cardio is never bland, it’s always a mix of glute & hamstring training while being mindful of my target heart rate & fat burning zones. I go from the stairmill, to the elliptical, to the recumbent bike, to the treadmill & I always use the equipment in non-traditional ways such as kickbacks on the stairmill & walking lunges on the treadmill!
Day 1: Cardio first then Quads, Glutes, & Calves
Day 2: Triceps & Biceps
Day 3: Cardio & Abs
Day 4: Delts & Chest
Day 5: Cardio first then Glutes & Calves!
Day 6: Back
Day 7: Cardio first then Hams, Glutes, & Calves
Day 8: Day off
Day 9: Delts
Day 10: Cardio & Abs
Usually the following 10 days I mix it up. Different exercises & different combinations of supersets, giant-sets, & circuits, etc....always keeping my body guessing!
Eating every few hours, 6-7 meals a day, & controlling portions is essential to any good meal plan! I eat lots of fish, turkey, & bison.....my favorite carbs at the moment are quinoa & yams! Its important to have a balanced diet of good fats, lean proteins, & starchy & fibrous carbohydrates!
