How and when did you start training?

I was a gymnast for many years and I also coached gymnastics, so “conditioning” was a part of my routine, but I started lifting in my senior year of college because I started seeing muscular women and I was becoming more interested in nutrition and becoming lean.

How long do you spend in the gym during a typical workout?

1-2 hrs (including cardio).

You say legs are your least favorite body part to train… how do you over come this and
get through a leg workout?

I just have a plan before hand and I know it’s not that bad once I start. I don’t like training legs because in 2003 I was paralyzed for a few months and it was very hard and humbling to gain my strength back. Every so often (especially on leg presses) I feel that “old” twinge, when I was regaining mobility and it makes me very emotional, so I tend to avoid presses. I do lots of lunges and high reps though and I just “suck it up”.

What is your best body part train and why?

I love training back or more specifically I love doing Pull-ups, because I think its bad ass when a chick can do them☺

How do you manage to stay motivated?

I honestly go through ups & downs in motivation just like anyone else. Recently, I’ve started doing some fitness “challenges” with my friends, Aubrie Richeson and Jaquelyn Kay. We post videos of the challenges and they are HARD!! It has been making it really fun and making me want to train harder so I don’t DIE. In general, though, I think its self-discipline that keeps me working even when my motivation is low.

What is your training routine like?

Ever since becoming a full time trainer, there has been A LOT less consistency to my routine. Some days I’m just so busy, or my body needs rest. I usually lift or do heavy metabolic workouts 4 days per week and I will generally do 45 min of stairs or a 25 min HIIT cardio routine 5 days per week.

Two days off is about the average, but sometimes, if I’m feeling good, getting rest and my workload is slower, I’ll go every day.

I’m a big believer in listening to my body and also trying to have a balanced life. I won’t choose the gym over my marriage, my friendships or my family.
Yes, sometimes I have to sacrifice time with them, but I try not to be obsessed. I have seen too many people in this industry lose sight of what is important and they end up with bomb physiques, ripped to the bone, and go home alone and are very, very lonely.

What does your diet consist of?

My diet doesn’t change much ever. I get obsessed with something to eat and I’ll eat it for months before changing it up. I eat some fruit, lots of veggies, fish and chicken. I was actually a vegetarian for 10 years and to this day I still don’t eat red meat or pork (yuck!!) the thought of a big, juicy steak, makes me want to gag!! LOL
I LOVE my oats, egg whites, and I love new things like pumpkin and eggplant. I also usually do one or two protein shakes a day (I like Gaspari Myofusion, Betancourt, and PVL Whey Gourmet) I also love adding my “special fats”; mixed nuts and nut butters!! Mmmmmmm!

What advice would you give to an aspiring bikini competitor and fitness model?

I would tell them to make sure you are competing for you and you only. I would also tell new girls; never take yourself so seriously! Make this lifestyle about building relationships, meeting people with similar interests, use it for personal goals and HAVE FUN!

Who are your favorite figure competitors, athletes or fitness models?

I have many favorites and so many of them are also my friends so I’m even more blown away by how awesome they are! I’m especially impressed by the athletes and models who have their hearts in the right place; a few are: Jamie Eason, Chady Dunmore, Aubrie Richeson, Jaquelyn Kay, Jessica Putnam, Emily Zaler, Tosca Reno… and I’m sure I’m forgetting quite a few more!! I love all these gals for different reasons. I look up to quite a few because they are also very savvy business women.

…and your best body part in a man?

Hmmmm.. I love when a guy has nice broad chest, shoulders and back. Honestly, though, I think with a guy, it’s an all over package. They can be smaller and lean and that’s pretty hot too. A huge broad shouldered guy with puny legs looks kind of silly. All in all though, the HOTTEST thing about a guy, is a funny sense of humor!! Any one that can make me laugh is 10x better looking in my book!
PS Guys; I am happily married with a hot, broad shouldered, funny man.. but just in case you want to know how to get a fit chick, there you go;)

What is the number one philosophy you live by?

Life is an adventure, live, laugh, love.
We only get one life, so don’t make excuses and don’t let fear hold you back. When I’m in doubt, I just hold on and have faith. So far, it’s worked!
