I started lifting weights in college, but I started training for competitions in January 2010! I had a friend who used to do fitness shows and every time we would work out together she would say how I had to train for a show, at least once LOL she said she knew I would love it and be totally hooked if I just tried it! It’s funny now because she knew me so well! Once I trained for and competed in my first show in March 2010, I was completely addicted.
On an ideal day, I would spend about 90 minutes in the gym, broken up into 30 min of cardio and 60 minutes for my lift. When possible, I love doing an AM and PM split.
I am always setting new goals and striving to be better. I will usually have a few goals that I am striving for at one time so if I reach one goal, there are still others to keep me focused. I think the other thing that keeps me motivated is the fact that I truly love the process and love fitness!
When I am off-season, I LOVE running sprints on the treadmill and running stairs! When I am in-season, I do a lot of low impact cardio with high intensity intervals. You can find me on the step-mill, elliptical and in a lot of indoor cycling classes.
My schedule changes every month but here is what I am doing right now.
Diet consists of lots of lean protein, veggies and complex carbs. While it changes slightly during show prep and off-season, the basic foundation stays the same. Here is a sample day:
4-5 egg whites and 1/3 cup oats
(Top Secret Nutrition Diet Accelerator, TSN digestive enzymes, HMB)
½ apple and 1 scoop Top Secret Nutrition Whey Protein
4 oz. ground turkey breast, 2 cups kale or green beans, 4 oz. yams
(HMB, TSN digestive enzymes)
4 oz. tuna, 1 cup cabbage, chopped onion and red bell pepper
1 scoop TSN Whey Protein
5 oz. white fish or 4 oz. chicken breast, 2 cups salad (add tomato, onion, red bell pepper), 1 ½ cups asparagus or zucchini (TSN digestive enzymes)
I married the most amazing man about 3 and a half years ago! I am most proud of the solid marriage that I am building with him. He has been an amazing support since I started competing and much of my success is directly related to my husband’s encouragement.
HA!!! During off season, I give myself a treat meal once a week ☺ Knowing that treat meal is coming REALLY helps me stay focused during the week! Another thing I do is cook a bunch of food at one time. I will have 4-5 days of food made and ready to go so that if I have a craving, I don’t really have an excuse to get it…I have food at home waiting for me.
This last show prep, I really focused on making sure I enjoyed my “diet” food. I experimented with different vinegars and spices to find combinations that I enjoyed and that didn’t make me feel like I was cutting anything out. It was the smoothest prep that I have had so far!
